Waterly Memorial/Sixth of June 2022 Recap

"Just when you thought it was over, the sky turned black and we all fell to earth..."

In the darkest of timelines, COVID hit and gaming together became a thing few wanted to do. *Few smart people wanted to do. But we kept on keeping on and eventually, the blackness (kind of) passed so that gathering together became a (somewhat) safer gamble.

And, for the first time in years, going back even before the pandemic hit, we congregated to pay tribute to the Sainted Myndo Waterly, for our (going to return to doing it) annual Sixth of June event. It was a bit of a bittersweet occasion - returning to an event we haven't held since 2018 or 2019 was pretty great but we were also missing a lot of the core crew due to scheduling conflicts or illnesses or disinterest or divorce so...

We powered on, however! And we had nongamer guests over just to help us drink & eat the foods per previous events, which was nice. You don't get to interact the same way when you're gaming but it's just really nice to have the homies around.

Matching up, we had me teaching three newcomers Alpha Strike in a stripped down format. The rules, not the players. This time. I originally had thought about doing a team game with a Binary of Clan 'Mechs to a side for the benefit of the new players, but it looked like it would work better for speed purposes if we split up into two 1v1s with a Star per. And yes, I know, Waterly Memorial w/o Word of Blake 'Mechs is kinda weird, but the SO was entertaining guests more than being interested directly in rolling dice, so I just stuck w/what I had easily on hand, and in plastic (for the most part).

I had six prebuilt Stars to use, with the option of pulling more from my "warchest" quickly and easily. Two of the six were designed to be lighter scout elements (for team games) and the other four were evenly matched 275pts, so those are what we used - a Star each of Clan Ghost Bear Rasalhague Galaxy, Clan Smoke Jaguar Delta Galaxy, Clan Steel Viper Alpha Galaxy, and Clan Jade Falcon Turkina Keshik.

A bit of time has passed since then and I drank a lot later that night, so what I do remember is that Brian lost to me, Poppy & Kilcoin mostly had a draw as he had to leave for a work function before coming back, and it was just a really fun time all around. Can't wait to bring the team back together to dive into more advanced rules and unit building, as well as to encourage these fine folks to pick up some box sets and sourcebooks lmao.

Operation: Nachtfalke Even More Advanced Rules

Actually, less of an advanced rules and more of a hybridization. Alpha Strike is tough w/the current way Nacht is set up to implement. And normal Total Warfare BTech is tough for large scale games.

So, for vehicles/tanks and battle armor formations, which are weird in BTech either way, I think using the Alpha Strike card might work. Units would be subject to the standard AS rules for range - 1 to 3 hexes for short, 4 to 12 for medium, 13 to 24 for long, with their damage inflicted pursuant to the range bracket. Instead of 2d6 against the target's TN, it'll be 1d12 per point of damage possible (like we currently do in AS games) and any hit will be like a 10pt damage attack, hit location rolled for normal. This means that battle armor is potentially way overpowered and something like a Carnivore, if the dice gods are good, could smash out 70 pts of damage in one turn, but it's an acceptable alternative to combined arms issues that arise in Total Warfare.

On the flip side, any hit against an AS unit will do base damage/10, rounded up w/a minimum of 1. So a 'Mech with a ton of medium lasers is potentially the biggest nightmare to an AS unit since one with 4ER PPCs could still only do a maximum of 8pts of damage versus 20 medium lasers which could do 20pts total. Dice gods willing. TN would work mostly the same - TMM basically translates straight across for move distance, with the caveat that a unit would have to move more than half max distance for full TMM or half TMM (round down) for less than half move. Otherwise hovercraft would be nuts to hit.

Most other rules work as written with just the adjustment made for terminology. Obviously no driving or piloting SPAs will matter and skill improvement costs work with just the one number since they're an aggregate anyway. I'll have to playtest this some though. That'll be my plan for the week.

Tetanus Shot Time - Unit Spotlight: Clan Steel Viper

Klondike, Invasion-era, Wars of Reaving-era Clan Steel Viper force. Both Clan Invasion-era Khans have their appropriate 'Mechs represented here, as does Wars of Reaving Khan/ilKhan Brett Andrews (Black Python), and, if it mattered, Elementals for Boyle Grimani.

Probably one of my coolest campaign-ready forces.

Forever Faithful - Unit Spotlight: Clan Smoke Jaguar

It's weird to put together a Clan force for a Clan that was "killed off," mostly, almost 20 years ago, but after reading Blaine Pardoe's "Forever Faithful" novel, about the end of CSJ and the beginnings of The Fidelis, I felt it almost necessary. Also, I actually had a short-lived CSJ-themed force back in the 90s as sort of a "black hat" unit but those 'Mechs were long since stripped and repainted. Also, Children of Kerensky.

With the new Clan Invasion box sets coming out this year, plus the new plastic Lance and Star packs, I decided I would take another look at MechCommander/MCGold for inspirations. The campaign to take Port Arthur is, at best, a footnote in the overall BattleTech history, but I had hour upon hour logged in on my first desktop PC when MC came out. When Gold came out, I redownloaded it and picked right back up with the fun. Now, as an in-universe type game, MC is absolutely ripe with smaller, ragtag force ideas. Taking a short lance of two Commandos and a Firestarter against Smoke Jaguar bondsmen to secure needed supplies is the stuff BattleTech is made of and the later missions where you're rocking an entire company (probably mostly Clantech assaults, if you use cheat codes to remove drop weight restrictions, not that -I- would ever do something like that) to fight off elite stars of Jaguars in the middle of cities... If I weren't already a huge BattleTech fanboy, that would have done it.

So Delta Galaxy has a decent paint scheme, that I don't struggle with, and it's fairly iconic enough as a Smoke Jag unit, but that could also become a Nova Cat one if I so choose (whether as a CNC proxy or if I wanted to expand later on, or a Fidelis unit if I want to add RotS units as well) with the forces available/that will be available throughout 2020. And, by building with the plastic Star/Lance Packs, this will be one of the most cost effective units I could run. Not to mention, now that my kiddo is getting old enough to play Alpha Strike, I'm a lot more comfortable with him using one-piece plastic 'Mechs (high quality though they are), than let him use a 19-piece metal Marauder.

Future campaign prospects include - Clan Invasion, Battle of Operation Bulldog, Task Force Serpent, The Great Refusal, and the 5th Succession War.

(I made a lot of changes from my initial spreadsheet. Now it won't even fit in one screen.)

(NOTE - Fully updated now that Wave One has been delivered)

Do We Really Need Diversity?

I wouldn't say that "the hobby" takes up the vast majority of my free time, but I'd also be lying if I said it didn't. I mean, if you follow absolutely any of my social media, you'll know that I'm constantly posting about this game or that, BattleTech or Fallout, whatever we're playing/putting stuff together for. On top of that, one of my favorite things to do whilst the wife or child aren't home is to stream gaming related podcasts or Twitch, honestly some of the best sources of inspiration out there. Because I'm a fan, I follow a lot of these folks on Instagram or Facebook, interact, get to know them in the virtual sense, etc. And the other day, I saw one of them put out a call for diversity, and post a picture of basically some (forgive me if this is an assumption) "cishet white dudes" as the reason they were looking.

Now, I keep this blog mostly focused on BattleTech, so most people that read it probably don't know me in real life, but those that do, know I'm fairly hard on millennials (despite being close to the age frame) or entitled people or victim complexes, and Gods know I will hammer some SJWs so I want to assure you, that's not where I'm going with this.

Because I legit nodded when I saw the post.

Those that have been playing BattleTech for more than two decades know that early BTech fell hardcore into the "Yellow Menace" trap. The Capellan Confederation and Draconis Combine, the two heavily Asian-themed factions, alternated between being super hardcore repressive regimes that wanted nothing more than to "kill all round eyes" and totally inept groups that existed for no other reason than to make "the white hat" in British-inspired House Davion look that much better. It wasn't until... Shit... Uh... 3060ish in the game's timeline (late 90s) that this started to swing and be more... I don't want to use the word "realistic" when it comes to any portion of BattleTech, but if the shoe fits...

I'm not saying this was done with an overt racist intent. Michael Stackpole was a big driver of the fiction back in the day and whilst his writing isn't always great (or even good, sorry, Mike - the over-reliance on exposition, "Mary Sue" characters, and implausible ex machina devices sometimes get a little much) & I would never insinuate the guy is a racist. Nor is every major BattleTech character an aforementioned "cishet white dude," because some of the best characters (Ariana Winston, Karianna Schmitt, Tyra Miraborg) have been women, and a handful have been of color beyond the standard Asian characters of Drac or CapCon origin.

But, early FASA and, to a lesser extent, FanPro & Catalyst, played to a target audience that was predominately male, predominately white, and predominately middle aged or living in their mother's basement. I'M KIDDING ON THAT LAST PART. I actually have no idea on the age frame, except that BattleTech came out in the early 80s and anime fans (because of the now-Unseen) were the bread and butter to start. And titling the big dust off from the Word of Blake "the Jihad" was fucking terrible. Stupidly so.

And that's a weird thing for me. See, I titled this in the form of a question, and that's misleading, because of course we fucking need diversity, dumbasses. What was odd for me with the post, and the reason for this, is that I guess my experiences with this hobby are not at all indicative of the norm? I've gamed with a lot of ladies in my life (BattleTech or otherwise), and have thrown dice with some POCs (including a former roommate that I bonded with, originally, in part because of BattleTech) and honestly - I will game with fucking anyone, regardless of shit like gender identity, ethnic background, sexual orientation, or any other way humans chose to classify themselves. As long as you aren't a fucking asshole, hell yes, saddle up and let's do this.

The cons I go to are half a step shy of tasting the rainbow when it comes to the panoply of the human condition, but something Randall Bills shared a while ago stuck with me - just because you don't see harassment or discrimination in your community, doesn't mean it isn't there. And that's not speaking with any "white guilt" or the like. It's a valid observation. Because we have to police ourselves and police each other to do better. No where should be more of a safe space than gaming. We're geeks playing make believe in one sense or another and we have to be inclusive. I'm not saying that I think every gaming group needs to run out like some affirmative action program and round up all the "minorities" they can find to join up, but I am saying, if someone that isn't a "cishet white dude" shows any interest in the games you're rolling with, get to the know them. Get some of their perspective on your game. And if they game with you, don't be insensitive about who they are.

I point that out because of the controversy with a UK convention and a veteran game runner pulling a really uncomfortable and inappropriate scene into a public game. Obviously I wasn't there, I don't have any comment otherwise (you can look for it) but it serves as a big reminder to the rest of us- get to know your players, get to know what they find acceptable and unacceptable in games you're playing as a group. That goes across the board, whether we're talking diversity or not, but if you're a white dude like me, be cognizant about how you portray slavery in your Exalted game when one of your players is African-American, maybe omit the whole gang rape story thread in Vampire when it's (rightfully) probably going to make the young lady in your game no longer enjoy playing, skip the whole "Yellow menace" portion of talking about Liao and Kurita to anyone at all interested in BattleTech (please, not even for diversity, but because it's fucking cringe worthy).

Our games can only survive with continuous new blood and as demographics switch, less and less of that new blood is going to be the "traditional" middle aged white guy with a bit of a gut and bad personal hygiene (mostly kidding, again). Even if that were 99% of the target audience of these games (it's not), the 1% still deserve to be respected and included in this hobby that we all love.

Shoutout to companies like New Agenda Publishing and Onyx Path Publishing for trying to be ahead of the curve on this. (And yes, I know OPP has run into issues in other arenas as well...)

ALSO, I did this on my phone, right now, after working all day and eating salmon & couscous, so if it's disjointed or I failed to make a coherent point, at the end of the day, diversity is what makes us stronger, not weaker.
